Description

During the 1970s and 1980s Sabre carved a niche in the market by consistently producing handsome, high-quality boats that were nicely finished below and sailed well in a variety of conditions. This was the heyday of dual-purpose boats and Sabre competed with Tartan, C&C and other quality production builders. In 1976, Sabre expanded its line with the introduction of the 34.  Roger Hewson designed the Sabre 34 with classic lines, pinched ends and a reverse transom,  which is why this is a vessel that will never go out of style. The skeg hung rudder and offset prop add to ease of handling whether under power or sail.

Below decks and handcrafted in the finest Maine tradition you find the quality craftsmanship only found in a Sabre. The fit and finish reflect the renowned Sabre attention to detail, with hand crafted oiled teak bulkheads, doors and drawers, caned locker door fronts and a teak and holly cabin sole.

If you want a classic looking cruising boat that also sails with ambition, the Sabre 34 is it and Dorset is a very nice example. She is certainly worthy of your inspection!

Accommodations

The traditional teak and caned interior layout of Sabres, while simple, give you a boat that has a nice comfortable feeling. The cabin sole is finished in a high gloss, with the other surfaces in a matte finish. The current owners had the interior foam and fabrics replaced in 2011, also increasing the thicknesses of the seat backs and V berth for greater comfort.

Starting forward there is a 6' 4" long V berth, with fiddled shelves lining both hull sides. There are drop-front lockers below the berth. Immediately aft on port is a hanging locker, with four large drawers below that.

The head compartment is across from the hanging locker on starboard. There is a manual head, teak shower grate and storage below the sink as well as along the hull side.

Moving aft into the main saloon, there are opposing 6' 4" long settees on port and starboard. Each settee has seat backs that pull down for access to storage behind them, while above and behind are a pair of caned door lockers with a fiddled shelf between them. The dinette table is bulkhead mounted and can be used in either a single or double leaf position. There are fiddled book shelves on the wall unit behind the table, visible when the table is in the lowered position.

The galley is on the starboard side at the base of the companionway. U shaped, the double sinks are located toward center line on the forward portion, with the stove along the hull side and the ice box across the aft portion. There is plenty of drawer storage located beneath the end of the sink as well as along the aft side beneath the companionway. There is storage also beneath the sink as well as along the hull sides above the counter space. A trash bin is provided beneath a countertop lid for easy disposal.

Across from the galley on port is a navigation station and quarter-berth. The nav top is generous in size and deeper than most; there is also a stack of drawers beneath it. Electronics and additional storage is located along the hull side there and even more storage is located beneath the quarter-berth..
