"Adventuress"
1983 Bayfield Cutter Ketch
Specifications
Description
The interior is innovative in layout. When I see a clipper bow and traditional lines like this, my mind immediately thinks of small interior spaces. That is certainly not the case with the Bayfield 40. She is bright and roomy with plenty of natural light and ventilation. The huge butterfly hatch in the centerpiece of the saloon; solid teak paneling is seen throughout and is enhanced with many very attractive accents. The two stateroom layout and other accommodations make the Bayfield 40 an excellent choice for a cruising couple with occasional guests or two couples.
"Adventuress" is certainly a fine example of these beautiful yachts. The owner has cared for her lovingly and it shows. She truly loves her boat and it is with mixed emotions that she offers "Adventuress" for sale, as she is heading off on another adventure in her life. This is a wonderful opportunity to own a beautiful classic. She is beautiful and you'll get complimented wherever you take her. Call today and come see for yourself- you won't be disappointed!

Overview- The interior of the Bayfield 40 is strikingly handsome and just plain feels comfortable to be in. The rich teak woodwork and pin rail fiddled shelves, combined with the white coach roof surfaces, provide a tastefully done interior that is bright and airy- unlike the "down inside a cave" feel you expect from most traditional vessels. The large overhead butterfly hatch and generous use of hatches and port holes help keep it that way and allow the space to be comfortable even on hot days.
Head- Starting forward, the head is extremely spacious and features a large walk in shower stall. The head is located on centerline forward, with a tall linen locker with shelves and another locker below that to port, followed by the shower. There is a molded fiberglass seat and a shower wand and hose that is long enough to shower al fresco should you get the urge. The starboard side has a large counter with sink and a tremendous of storage above and below the counter top. There are two overhead hatches with screens and two opening ports that provide above average ventilation to this space. There is a door with a large mirror and magazine rack separating this space from the saloon.
Aft of the head on starboard is a hanging locker that houses the AC unit. There is a drawer and fiddled counter top above that.
Galley- Across from the locker and next aft on port is the galley. Aligned along the hullside and angled in at the forward end, with a huge refrigerated icebox on the aft end, this space provides a great working area for food preparation. There is louvered double door storage below the large stainless steel sink, numerous teak doored lockers above and cubby spaces immediately behind the counter surfaces. A gimbaled propane stove is located between the sink and refrigeration.
Nav station- The nav station is located just aft of the ice box. Facing the hull, there is a large chart table that will readily give plenty of space to spread out a chart book. There is a stack of drawers to the right of the knee space that provides plenty of storage for small items. Above the table the instruments and electrical panels are at your fingertips. The nav seat is a bench type, which has storage beneath it and a hinged back, so it can be used as a nav seat or, with the back reversed, additional seating facing the dinette area.
Dinette- Across from the galley and nav areas is the large C-shaped dinette. The cushions have been recently reupholstered and lend a rich, sophisticated look to the space. The dinette will easily seat five and has storage beneath as well as behind the cushions. An insert can easily be dropped in to convert this to a huge, quite long double berth. Above and behind the dinette are lockers and pin rail fiddled shelves, with teak staving along the hull side. The dinette table is quite large and on centerline. A large leaf can unfold towards the settee, which will comfortably serve three. Two additional leaf sections can unfold to add several more seating places, comfortably seating five or six. On the galley side of the table there is a long drawer and double doored storage beneath the table for pots, pans and silverware.
Aft cabins- There are two identical staterooms aft of the nav station and dinette. In typical Ted Gozzard style, the spaces can be left open to make the entire space feel more open, closed off partially by means of a pocket panel that slides up on the forward bulkhead, or completely by also closing the pocket door to the cabin. There are turned posts at the corners of the cabin partitions that lend an usual touch to the space. Inside each cabin, there is a large double berth with wonderful headroom- no claustrophobia in here! The hullsides are lined with teak staving, a drop front locker aft and long pin rail fiddled shelf. The forward end has a dresser with three huge drawers and a double doored hanging locker above that. Ventilation and lighting in each space is provided by a Hella fan, two opening ports, an overhead hatch and a reading light.

"Adventuress" is a cutter rigged ketch, which provides a great amount of flexibility in sail plan for various weather conditions. Lines are led aft to the cockpit for safe single handing or for a cruising couple. The main and jib have only been used a handful of times since new, so for all intensive purposes they are "new". The staysail and mizzen sail are older but serviceable. The standing rigging has been replaced and seen very little use as well; the running rigging is fresh and has lots of life left to it also.
