Description

The Moody 425 is a spacious center cockpit layout with two staterooms, 2 heads, workshop, nav station and a very functional galley/salon layout. This 1990 Moody 425 sloop-cutter has a removable inner forestay, modern under body, sugar scoop stern, a Bahamas friendly 5'10" draft and an ICW friendly mast. She is a dry center cockpit design with all sail controls led to the cockpit. The vessel is ideally equipped for a single handed sailor or a couple with a total of 7 berths to accommodate a large group of guests. The fin keel design gives her fine sailing characteristics with the advantage of a tough cast iron keel and a strong skeg hung rudder. The fin keel and skeg rudder; Vetus bow thruster and 50HP, 1.8 liter Ford diesel with 3 bladed prop give her nice manners when docking. Island Lady has the coveted Lloyd's Registry of Shipping Certificate and was regularly inspected by a Lloyd's surveyor during construction.

Accommodations & layout
Forward stateroom:
There is a large V berth forward, with private access to the forward head. Six overhead lockers line either side of the berth, with teak staving along the hullsides to finish the look. More storage is located beneath the berth. On starboard there is a hanging locker with another locker beneath and a shelf above. Two brass reading lights, an overhead hatch and a fan provide ventilation and light.

Forward head:
Access, as mentioned above, is from the forward stateroom as well as from the saloon. The sink and counter space are molded for easy wipe down and have storage beneath as well as outboard along the hull. Ventilation is from an overhead hatch.

Main saloon:
On port is a straight settee that converts into a sea berth with lee cloth; just forward of that is a hanging locker and end table. Across on starboard is a U shaped settee which can convert to a 6'5" long double berth. A centerline drop-leaf table provides seating for six comfortably. There is storage behind both seating areas as well as cabinet and shelf outboard and above them. Beneath the cabin sole in the saloon there is a false bilge floor, increasing the dry storage immensely. The entire saloon/nav/galley area is illuminated and ventilated by four fixed lights, eight brass lights (reading & overhead), two hatches, one fan and three passive vents.

Nav station:
Located on starboard, the nav station is forward facing and well designed. There is a large chart table with storage drawers beneath it, storage beneath the seat and a comfortable seat back. Cubby and shelf storage is along the hull side and all of the electronics and electrical controls are at your fingertips.

Workroom:
Aft of the nav station on starboard, the third stateroom space has been converted to a nice workroom with a workbench, vise, hanging locker and shelf storage space. The genset enclosure and AC unit are located beneath the workbench. There are several lights, an opening port, a fan and a fixed light in this space.

Galley:
"Island Lady" went through a major refit in 2001 at what is now the Hinckley Boatyard in Stuart, Florida. This included the galley, which was completely rebuilt, including new Corian counter tops and Grunert refrigeration. The galley is L-shaped, with the double round sinks located towards centerline. There is storage beneath the sinks, a tip-out trash bin and a generous amount of counter and storage space, including along the hullsides and along the centerline of the boat. The area is well lit and has several fans for ventilation. There is also walk-thru access to the aft head and cabin from here.

Master stateroom:
The master stateroom has a queen-size centerline berth with a padded headboard and a pair of brass reading lights on either side. Teak staving lines the hullsides. There is a curved settee to starboard and a cosmetic center with mirrors to port. One either side are counter spaces with deep bin clothes lockers beneath, lockers behind and below the settee, a hanging locker and a full length mirror on starboard. Two opening ports, a fan and a hatch provide ventilation.

The master head has a shower divider and is equipped with his and hers above sink cabinets, below sink storage, a large mirror, an opening port and fan for ventilation and a large "dry" locker. The entire space is molded for easy clean up.

Hull and Deck
The GRP hull has been inspected and painted regularly and is free of blisters. "Island Lady" has a minimum amount of teak on deck to maintain. She has teak hand-holds on deck and teak trim around the solar panels giving her a warm look, and non-varnished teak soles in the cockpit and bench seats. The dock and coach roof are nearly 100% non skid surfaces embossed in the gel coat providing sure footing and ease of clean-up and maintenance. The deck is essentially flush forward of the mast, making for easy movement on deck and appealing good looks. "Fanny bar" supports are located on each side of the mast, hard points for harnesses on deck/in cockpit and points for jack lines allow for safe movement about the dock. Substantial deck rail stanchions contain the lifelines and the high toe rail for/aft provides a secure enclosure on deck. The deck stepped mast eliminates leakage into the cabin and the danger to your crew below decks should your mast fail. There are numerous hand holds throughout the cabin to make it safe to move about the cabin at sea. Island Lady features a custom arch/davit on the stern that adds significant convenience to the cruising experience. Solar panels and a wind generator are also mounted on the arch. The arch is designed to keep the dinghy clear of the sea in all conditions. The dinghy stowage does not interfere with access and use of the sugar scoop stern swim ladder and stern shower. The sugar scoop stern has two storage lockers for your snorkeling gear, shower soaps and reef shoes. Importantly, the sugar scoop allows easy boarding from your launch-dinghy for children and adults of any age.

Additional solar panels are mounted on the aft deck cabin top. The center cockpit seats six comfortably and features a fold-up cocktail table forward of the pedestal.

Engine
The 50HP Ford 1.8 liter, 4 cylinder diesel is a well though out engine that is easy and convenient to maintain and was designed for tens of thousands of hours of trouble-free operation. This engine is an overhead cam design resulting in quiet operation. The engine has received regular maintenance, is in excellent condition and has received all of the major scheduled maintenance attention. It has approximately 500 hours on it since a a major rebuild was done on it in 2003. The Ford diesel is a popular engine that was installed in the smaller cars in Europe; parts are readily available. The engine was designed for well over 200,000 miles of operation. The engine was marinized by Thorneycroft and the marine parts are available from ASAP Supplies and Moody. Moody provides excellent after market parts service and is email-courier friendly. Parts for all systems are readily available.

The well lit engine room is large and allows easy access to the engine. It is served by three large doors. The aft door allows access to the battery chargers, strainers, propeller shaft, packing gland, packing gland grease injection pump, the transmission, the engine wet/dry exhaust system and aft section of the engine. The windowed side entry door allows access to check the engine systems, starter access, oil change pump, fuel filter differential pressure gauges, freshwater pump and at shower pan pump. The forward door exposes the front of the engine for servicing the alternator belts, saltwater cooling pump and inspecting the fuel injection pumps. Note the mounting at the saltwater cooling pump allows replacement of the impeller in 5 minutes and the entire pump in 15 minutes.

There are many spare engine parts on board, designed for an extensive around the world voyage.
