"Suzee"
1994 Freedom Yachts 35
Specifications
Description
"Suzee" is a Dave Pedrick design built in Freedom Yachts "Hayday" with good materials and workmanship complemented by a varnished cherry interior. She features a Free-Standing keel stepped Carbon Rig, and wing keel. When selling these boats new, Freedom Dealers stressed the import of a sailing trial because of the remarkable blend of performance and ease of handling. Freedpm Yachts remain a boat of choice for Naraganset Bay sailors, where the boats were built. "Suzee" will serve to extend a cruising couples years with a boat or facilitate newer people entering the sport. She is a very balanced boat with a powerful sail plan that is easy to manage and reef with an electric halyard/mainsheet winch. To tack simply put the helm over. To run before the wind simply ease the main and wing the jib out to windward with the built-in CamberSpar. No need for a cruising spinniker as there is lot's of area in the mainsail....Highly recommended cruising boat!

740 square feet of canvas.... It's all about the Mainsail! Full Batten Laminate Main rides up and down on a low friction track with Harken Ball-Bearing cars. There is a ton of horse-power in this sail and it can be hoisted, sheeted, and reefed with the cabintop electric winch. The Mainsail is complemented by a Camber-Spar jib on hanks. There is a well engineered (but simple) down-haul system to douse the jib until it's convenient to go forward. Both sails in good condition.
The carbon fiber mast is painted white and the weight savings contributes to less pitching/rolling in a seaway. It also bends off to leeward in the upper wind ranges thereby de-powering the sail-plan to keep the boat on her feet.

"Freedom Yachts of Middletown, Rhode Island counts this Dave Pedrick-designed 35-footer as a solid success story. The sailboat line stakes its identity on three points: sound naval architecture, high-quality construction, and sailing simplicity based on the freestanding rig and self-tacking jib." (Practical Sailor) A reasonable way to envision the added performance of the tall carbon mast is that when sailing upwind it is akin to having two or three beefy crewmembers sitting on the rail at the boats maximum beam. You do not however have to feed the mast! In fact there is less potential corrosion and required maintenance than with an aluminum spar. Dave Pedrick is an accomplished Naval Architect who worked in the offices of Sparkman&Stephens. His designs are typically good looking boats that sail well! Suzee's owners were delighted to discover after sailing the boat in some breeze that the hull form promotes surfing and that they were not locked into a theoretical hull speed.... "Suzee" has been well cared for and is very close to turn key for new owners.
Reason for selling: Experienced sailor's have purchased a home near the Chesapeake Bay,continue to sail their smaller Marshall Catboat on Cape Cod and are exploring day sailing alternatives on Chesapeake Bay.
