The Ericson 380 is clearly a cruising boat, but her performance is certainly very respectable, with good balance to steer herself for long periods of time. The boat will point to within 35-40 degrees. With a sail area-displacement ratio of slightly over 18 and a displacement-length ratio of about 240, she has enough power for decent performance in light air yet is not so overpowered as to be impossible or dangerous to sail with a short handed crew.
Introduced in 1980, the Ericson 38 was designed by the incomparable Bruce King whose talent for drawing beautiful boats of near perfect proportions ranks him with the likes of Herreshoff, Stevens, Rhodes, and Tripp.
Don and Gene Kohlmann, two San Francisco sailors, began building Ericson 27s in Southern California in 1964. By 1971 the company was purchased by an East Coast organization that owned Boston Whaler. In 1984, Gene Kohlmann purchased the company back and produced the 38, 381 and the 38-200. He ran the company until Pacific Seacraft bought the molds for the 35 and 38 in 1990, producing the first new boats in 1991. When Pacific Seacraft took over, the entire interior was revamped which gave the “new” 380 a more quality finish down below.
She would be a superb choice for a discerning yachtsman looking for a passage-making cruiser that has performance, style and excellent equipment.

Forward stateroom- The forward berth is a generous 6'4" x 6'4" x 20" and can be used as an offset berth or a full V berth. The adjustable height dressing seat on starboard can be used as a seat, or when the cushion is simply raised into the upper position, extends the berth space to the full width. Drawer storage is beneath the berth and there is additional space beneath the berth forward and the changing seat. Anchor locker space is forward and there are fiddled shelves along both hullsides, with teak staving lining the hullsides above. On port there is an upper hanging and lower double door lockers with a shelf above them. On starboard there are upper and lower lockers with shelves and a tip-out hamper bin, with shelves above them. There are two opening ports and an overhead hatch for ventilation; additional lighting is from a pair of overhead lights and a pair of reading lights. The cabin doors meet in the center to close the space and fold back neatly out of the way when opened.
Saloon- Moving aft from the forward stateroom, the U-shaped dinette table is located on port. Solid teak with a hinged leaf (stored off the boat), you can easily seat six for meals. The table will drop down to make a nice 6'3" x 57" double berth. There is storage beneath and behind the seating, while above and behind it along the hullsides is a fiddled shelf and then a pair of louvered door lockers with a fiddled shelf between them above that. Teak staving lines the hull in the shelving areas.
On starboard there is a 6'6" long settee with a lee cloth; the storage and locker configuration is identicaly to the port side, with the aft end of the settee serving as the seat for the nav station.
The entire center cabin area of the boat has a rich feel to it and is a great example of the Pacific Seacraft craftsmanship. With all of the warm teak finished to a fine degree, white laminate coach roof sides and lots of ventilation- two overhead hatches, two dorade vents and seven opening stainless steel port lights- the space feels, well, just comfortable bright and inviting.
Navigation station- Facing aft and located on starboard, the nav station top is sloped for comfort (and also is a great angle for a laptop) and will fit a chart book nicely. Several innovative Pacific Seacraft features are found here- the nav top has a drop down extension mounted beneath the top that can swing down and turn the desk top into additional counter space. This is great to use as a workbench type counter space or as a place to get those bowls of food out of the way when you have a large group at the dining table. The signature Pacific Seacraft electrical panel drops down to 90 degrees for easy access to the wiring. The wiring is extremely tidy; you can trace each wire holding it's same position in the wiring bundle along it's path. There are several drawers beneath the nav top for parts storage and immediately behind that a hanging locker for your foul weather gear, with a shelf space above that.
Galley- On port and aft of the dinette, the L-shaped galley has two large deep polished stainless steel sinks oriented towards centerline- where they should be. There is a Force 10 stove and oven along the hullsides, with a cover for additional counter space when the stove is not in use. Bin storage is beneath the countertop between the two; there are double doors beneath the sinks and a drop-front locker beneath the stove for pots and pans. to the left of the stove is a tip-out bin and another locker beneath that. Sliding door storage is above and behind the hullsides counter spaces; there is also a tip-out utensil organizer.
Aft stateroom- Entered from just aft of the galley, the wide double berth is a generous 78" long by 64" at the head and 34" at the foot. There is a nightstand shelf above the engine box and a double doored hanging locker, with a shelf above that. A fiddled shelf runs aft along the hullside and teak staving lines the hull above that. The space is very well ventilated, with one opening port along the hullside and three into the cockpit- providing good cross ventilation.
Head- Separated from the staterooms for privacy, the head is made of fiberglass for easy wipe-down maintenance. The separate stall shower is a nice feature and a great place for wet foul weather gear, especially as the head is located at the base of the companionway. There is a locker beneath the stainless steel sink and sliding cabinet doors with shelves above it. Several opening ports provide good ventilation in here.

The plumbing on the boat is completely up to Pacific Seacraft standards and their serviceability and general durability are excellent. The seacocks are bronze and the plumbing installations are neatly executed and labeled. PLEASE NOTE: The current owner has the forward 30 gallon tank disconnected and is using that space for storage when offshore, as the storage was more important to him (given he has a watermaker). This can be retrofitted back fairly easily if so desired.

The 380 is a heavy construction with solid fiberglass in the hull and ½ inch of balsa and plywood reinforcement in the deck. The boat is quite stiff due to the Tri-Axial Force Grid, designed by Dave Pedrick, which is the basic framework of the structure and ties together all the load bearing points such as the chainplates and the keel. It is comprised of transverse floor timbers and longitudinal girders of unidirectional E-glass, this system also incorporates the foundations for the chainplate attachments The hull-to-deck joint is a small molded bulwark that is fiberglassed together. Cabinetry and bulkheads down below are tabbed to the hull and deck. New hullside paint by Osprey Marine Composites in August 2013!

The masthead, double spreader rig is keel stepped and provides plenty of power making the Ericson a true performance cruiser. The backstay is split and the rigging is far inboard for tight sheeting angles. All lines are led aft via a mast collar and the winches and sheets are all within reasonable reach of the helmsman.

The wiring on the Ericson 380 is done just like anything else Pacific Seacraft builds- very well. Pacific Seacraft uses only tinned copper multi-strand wire for it's durability. All wiring harnesses pass through rubber chafe guards when going through bulkheads. The hinged electrical panel drops down for easy inspection, all wiring is neatly bundled and is admired by marine surveyors every time for the level of attention to detail and neatness.
Blue Dancer is nicely equipped for cruising, with radar, chartplotter, autopilot, SSB radio, wind generator...
