***************************************************************************

***FRESH WATER !! (almost) ***

SALINITY*CORROSION*SUNLIGHT    Many people are unaware that the salinity of the water of the Northern Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries is a small fraction of ocean water salinity (0-30% of ocean salinity, depending on location and recent rainfall).  Upper tributaries (where FREE BIRD has been kept since 2011) in particular, are often close to ZERO SALINITY, similar to the Great Lakes, Lake Champlain, etc.  Some of the highly corrosive effects of ocean water on vessels kept in high salt environments are readily apparent; but many remain hidden until "disaster strikes."  Compared to boats in Florida and other "low-latitude" areas, the effect of UV sunlight is also greatly minimized on northern boats.

In addition to FREE BIRD benefiting from less UV and minimal salinity, she has been hauled and covered every winter (since 2011), further minimizing any impact of "exposure to the elements."  Her gelcoat continues to hold a very high lustre - and her metal surfaces are bright and shiny.

Attention (current and aspiring) Hunter owners:

*NOT A STOCK HUNTER 38!  MANY UPGRADES TO FACTORY SPECS*

(Other Hunter owners are encouraged and welcome to replicate any of the upgrades on FREE BIRD.  Information is available upon request.)

A VERY SPECIAL OWNER!  In addition to being meticulous about maintenance and care, the owner of FREE BIRD is also a safety and convenience minded electrical engineer.  As such, he enlisted one of the top electrical techincians on the Chesapeake to custom-install a number of over-the-top monitoring and other systems - including many upgrades from standard Hunter specs. These include, AGM batteries, battery monitoring, programmable regulator, LED lighting, oversized alternator, and much more.  Many other systems have also be been upgraded - including a high-water alarm and pump, running rigging refit, dripless shaftseal, etc etc.   Additional details and systems appear under FULL SPECIFICATIONS

MANUFACTURER'S COMMENTS

The Hunter 38 was designed as an exceptionally comfortable cruiser with outstanding performance and easy handling. The Hunter 38's sail plan features a large roach mainsail with flaking system and an anodized B&R double spreader fractional rig with struts on a conventional mast, or the easy-to-sail Selden furling system. Coupled with either sail plan, the Hunter 38's new stainless steel rudder design delivers exceptional power that is more aerodynamically efficient and responsive when under way. Interior comfort rules in the Hunter 38, thanks to the dedicated effort of our team of interior designers and stylists. Spaciousness is achieved by the 6'6" tall cabin ceiling framed in solid teak, which is balanced by an Everwear laminate teak-and-holly sole. An extra large salon, master stateroom with en suite head, guest stateroom with V-berth, full-service galley and dedicated nav station all work together onboard the Hunter 38 to create a functional interior living environment.
