Description

The 37 was one of Gulfstar’s most popular sailboat designs, with 151 hulls built between 1976 and 1979. The designer, Vince Lazzara, was one of the forerunners of fiberglass boat building. Previously the founder of Columbia Yachts in 1962, after many years at Gulfstar he went on to partner with Viking Yachts and designed a number of hulls with them. The Gulfstar 37 is a ruggedly constructed, sea kindly, blue water cruiser that has solid coastal and offshore performance credentials. It’s a great boat for a cruising couple and has served as a comfortable live-aboard for many over the years.

With a long waterline, sea-kindly long fin keel underbody and well balanced rig, the Gulfstar 37’s performance is similar to what many would expect on a 40’ cruising boat. She’s more than capable of taking you safely to Maine in the summer and then on to Bermuda and the Caribbean in the winter. In addition, with her 4’10” draft, cruising the Bahamas, the Keys and ICW or gunkholing along the many shallow anchorages of the East Coast is easy. The cockpit is roomy and secure, with plenty of room for the whole family or crew and guests. Wide side decks make it easy to move about and are reassuring to crew members.

Below deck is just what you would expect from a properly designed cruiser. One can’t help but be impressed with the amount of storage and living space you will find. Headroom is good at 6’3” or better. The galley to port is a proper seagoing one and well designed, with large double sinks on centerline and loads of counter and storage space. The nav station on starboard has served nicely as a home office and workbench for more than one person I have known over the years. The settees on either side of the centerline table can be used as single sea berths, with the port side pulling out to make a double. The forward stateroom is huge, with a large berth, plenty of locker space and room to walk around comfortably. The head has good space as well and can be accessed from the forward stateroom as well as from the saloon.

This very lucky vessel (Spirit) has had four conscientious owners who have maintained, upgraded and loved her along the way. Her current owner has been no exception; he has made a number of significant and costly improvements- please see the list of upgrades in the Full Specs section of this listing. While he loves the boat, the family has grown and they are now looking for something bigger.

This Gulfstar 37 is a great find. Live-aboard, cruise or just to have, it’s a lot of boat for the money, with good bones. The heavy lifting has already been done. Her bottom has been peeled and Vinylester resin applied, eliminating the blisters that were common in this vintage of yacht. The mast was pulled and repainted. While he was at it, the halyards, mast step, standing rigging and chain plates were replaced. The mast was rewired, a Strong Track was added for ease of handling the main and LED masthead lighting was installed. Lifelines and canvas were replaced, portholes were rebed and new teak house sides and fixed lights were installed. A new engine was installed, the transmission and rudder quadrant were rebuilt. Radar, chartplotter…. The list goes on and on…

Spirit is an ideal live-aboard- and extremely suitable if your plans are to do some long distance cruising and passage making. The expense that the current owner has gone to is substantial and as a result, it’s doubtful there is another Gulfstar 37 as well equipped and ready to go as Spirit is. Call and make an appointment to come see her today!

Accommodations

Forward stateroom: The spaciousness in this stateroom is truly unusual- it’s arguably one of the largest in a 37’ boat out there. Headroom is 6’3” and the berth is 6’4” long and 6’4” wide at the top. There are storage areas beneath the bunk for sail bags and such, as well as a pair of cubbies underneath where the center insert goes in. On starboard there is a large storage locker with four drop-front doors and a fiddled shelf above. On port there is a double doored hanging locker, with a doored locker above to aft and fiddled shelf space forward. There are reading lights, two opening ports and an overhead hatch for light and ventilation.

Head: There is entry into the head from either the forward stateroom or the saloon. There is a tiled L-shaped counter along the hull and aft bulkhead, with the sink located on the aft counter. There is storage beneath the sink and a large teak framed mirror above. Sliding mirrored doors conceal a generous amount of shelving along the hull side. The head is located forward along the hull. There is an opening port and a solar vent for ventilation and a pair of wall mounted lights. Headroom is 6’2”.

Saloon: The saloon on the Gulfstar 37 has opposing 6’4” long settees that pull out to make double berths. There is a lee cloth on the starboard one, while both settees have drawer and drop front storage compartments beneath them, storage behind the seat backs and two double doored cabinets and a fiddled shelf in between them above. Forward of the port settee is another seat, with storage beneath it and double-doored hanging and shelf storage behind it. Lighting and ventilation are from four large fixed lights, three opening ports, two hatches and assorted 12v. lighting.

Nav station: At the base of the companionway stairs on starboard, the nav station is L-shaped and has desktop space you seldom find in any boat. There is a swivel chair and loads of bookshelf space both above and below the work surface. Two drawers provide plenty of storage and there is a large louvered door locker with shelves just forward.

Galley: Located at the base of the companionway on port, the U-shaped galley has loads of counter space- and with the spacing just right to brace it is designed for sea going ease. The large double sink is located where it should be- towards centerline- and has storage beneath it. On the aft end is a well-insulated and refrigerated icebox. Along the hull is a stack of drawers, then the stove, with a pots and pan drop front storage area below. Above and along the hull is more storage, with sliding doors keeping things tidy and secure. Headroom in the galley area is 6’2”.
