Description

The Ingrid 38 was originally designed by Colin Archer, a Norwegian architect, in the late 1800's. Using the Viking ships as his model, his refinement of the double-ended sailboat achieved world-wide recognition for its heavy weather characteristics. In 1934, Wm. Atkins, an American naval architect, took the classic lines and made some slight changes. Proven design and quality of workmanship result in a superior boat for ocean passage. The Ingrid's full keel gives her incomparible directional stability. Balance the sails and her course will remain true without a hand on the helm. While you would expect performance in heavy air, you will be very pleased with light air performance. The boat will consistantly sail at 1/2 the windspeed, up to 8 knots.

Deck and hull
28" wide, slightly cambered decks provide for pleasant strolling. The chainplates are mounted outboard, thereby not encumbering human movement. Stanchions are lagged into the 6" high bullwarks. The presence of mizzen shrouds at the critical cockpit/side deck juncture essentially eliminate the possibility of a person overboard. Hull Construction: The sole obj. has been to build as strong a boat as possible in fiberglass. This has been achieved by increasing the glass content and reducing the resin content. The hull contains one layer of mat next to the gel coat and the remainder consists of multiple layers of 24 oz. woven roving. the glass to resin ratio exceeds 50% (In comparison, many boats have a 35% ratio). Strength is found in the interior as well. 1" thick AA marine plywood is used for the bulkheads and is glassed to the hull and the deck. (Industry standards are 1/2 to 3/4"). Inside the entire hull is 3/4" of foam insulation between the glass hull and the mahogany ceiling. The rudder is heavy glass laminate wrapped around Klegecell foam core. It is installed with massive bronze gudgeons and pintles. In 1999, a complete bottom job was done using vinyl ester resin.
