"Kuan Yin"
1979 Mason 43 ketch
Specifications
Description
The Ta Shing Yacht Building Company Limited dates back in boat building terms to 1947, building fishing boats and small commercial craft. In the 1960's the yard became involved in building sailing yachts, predominantly on an OEM contract basis for various American and occasionally European organizations, as well as building the Mason sailboats (33, 44, 54, 64) Ta Shing is the builder of the Baba & Toshiba models, designed by Robert Perry and others such as the Orion 50, and the Norseman 447.
Introduced in 1978, the Alvin Mason designed Mason 43 is a true classic and one of the most sought after cruising boats available. It has an offshore passagemaker pedigree that has been proven time after time. In fact, this is the design chosen by George Day, former editor of Cruising World and founder of the touchstone publication Blue Water Sailing for his own family’s circumnavigation back in the 90s.
The Mason 43 is a traditional design with a long trunk cabin, generous overhangs and a full keel with a cutaway forefoot. She has a heavy displacement that can power through choppiest of seas and has a very sea kindly motion. This, combined with her classic good looks and great accommodations, guarantee that this design is a worthy long-term investment. The Masons have earned a reputation for offering quality comparable to that of Hinckley, Swan, Alden & Little Harbor, and all at a lower price.
If your dream is a serious cruiser, built for long distance passages, then you should be looking at this boat with great interest. “Kuan Yin”, named for the oriental goddess of mercy and compassion, has seen her past and current owners safely through many ocean passages.
'Kuan Yin' has been used as a Sea Scout training vessel under the guidance of her current owner. In the course of that they have participated in the Annapolis, Marion and Newport to Bermuda races among other things. He is now parting with her reluctantly due to some health issues. She needs a little attention here and there, which is reflected in her price, but represents a good value for new owners that are willing to put a little sweat equity into her.

Forward stateroom: Aft of the double doored access to the chain locker is a nice sized (39" x 75") offset berth to port. Headroom in this space is 6'4". Drawer storage as well as bins are available beneath the entire berth. There is a dressing seat with storage beneath and behind it, with a good bit of counter space forwward of that. Teak staving lines both hullsides, with wide fiddled shelves. On starboard there is dresser storage and a hanging locker. A bi-fold door separates the space from the rest of the boat; ventilation is good, with a large overhead hatch, three opening ports and a dorade vent.
Head: Next aft on port is the head, with- you guessed it- headroom- 6' 6" of it. The head sink is stainless steel, set in a marble counter top and oriented facing forward. There is a large mirrored medicine cabinet above the sink. Along the hullside is the Jabsco manual head, with large double doored lockers above and behind that. Aft is a separate shower stall, with a teak grate sole, teak slat bench seat and a H/C pressure mixer and shower wand. The space is ventilated with a port and dorade vent.
Across from the head and in the corridor there is a double-doored hanging locker, with a shelf and porthole above that. To its right is a bureau with a locker above and three drawers and a bin locker below. Also in the corridor is the propane cabin heater, so it sits somewhat out of the way behind the mast, but still centrally located for more even heating.
Saloon: On starboard there is a straight settee with a pilot berth above that. At the head of the pilot berth there is a locker; at the foot a fiddled shelf bin. There is teak staving along the hullsides behind it. Beneath the pilot berth is a straight settee. Four bin storage lockers to access the space beneath the pilot berth provide a tremendous amount of storage. There is also some storage beneath the settee on the forward end, with water tankage located towards the aft end. Just aft of the settee is another tall locker with shelves inside and a shelf with the nav station radar display above.
The lower berth pulls out to provide a 27" wide single berth. Meanwhile, the wooden front of the pilot berth drops down and the back cushions from the settee fill in the additional space, making a 32" wide pilot berth. Both berths are 6'6" long.
On port is the U-shaped dinette, which will easily seat four and can do six if needed. The dinette converts to a large double berth. There are storage lockers along the hullsides behind the back cushions and above that one finds a pair of double-doored shelving lockers with a fiddled shelf between those. Overhead and in the center of the space is the large butterfly hatch, which provides a classic traditional feel to the space.
Galley: The galley is located on port and aft of the dinette. The forward side of the galley has a large icebox with 12 volt refrigeration. The refrigeration system is a spillover type, with top access for each box and front access for the refrigerator side. Above this counter is an overhead cabinet for storing dishware, with doors on the galley and the dinette sides. Beneath is open, so there is pass-through space between the two. Along the hullside is the stove, with three lockers above and behind it and the counter ends. There is a prism above the stove for good natural lighting. Facing aft is another long counter, with an extra deep double sink. There is a trash bin recessed into the counter between the sinks and the stove. Above the sinks is a large double doored cabinet and a mug/glass storage rack.
Nav station: Located at the base of the companionway and facing aft, the space is somewhat shielded from the elements by a paneled end, yet still easily accessible. There is a large nav top that will easily hold a chart book, with storage beneath the lid and a cubby forward of the foot space below that. The base of the seat is also for storage. There are two lockers below and along the hull, with several shelf spaces also along there. A louvered door locker is above and facing you, with a binder storage shelf to the right of that. A shelf is above those, which is a handy landing zone for small things you may want to get at without coming below- keys, sunglasses, a book...
The companionway steps are a fully enclosed structure, with two drop-front lockers beneath the top two steps and another large locker accessed from the side with shelves in there. The galley side of the steps has a massive stainless steel railing, which gives you a really strong, safe hand hold when coming in or out of the boat.
Master stateroom: Moving aft and entering from the centerline of the boat, has both a double berth (6' 7" x 46") on port for at anchor and a single berth (6' 7" x 30")on starboard that makes an excellent sea berth while underway. There is a bi-fold door closing this cabin from the rest of the boat. Between the berths there is a large changing seat, which hinges up to access the space below. Both hullsides have a generous amount of locker and shelf space. There are three ports and a hatch for ventilation.
