1979 Shannon 28
Specifications
Description
The Shannon 28 is a rare jewel and the ideal two person blue water cruising boat. These classic beauties are boats that are passed along lovingly by owners who are truly sad to part with them.
Shannon Yachts was founded in 1975 by Walter Schultz. Based in Bristol, Rhode Island, he has held true to his initial vision- to build offshore cruising boats to the highest standards possible. To this day Shannon Yachts has done just that, from 24’ to 57’, earning an international reputation for their offshore integrity. All of his designs have been logging millions of offshore miles (mostly by couples) and have been seen in every major harbor around the world.
The Shannon 28 was included in Ferenc Mate's compilation of the world's best sailboats for good reason. Comfortable, stable sailing platforms, they are solid enough to easily circumnavigate, nimble enough to day sail, sea kindly classic beauties that turn heads wherever they go.
Shannon hand-built only 55 Shannon 28s, beginning in 1978 until they retired the model in 1986. Cutter rigged with a cutaway forefoot, internally ballasted fixed keel, our offering has tiller steering, a skeg hung rudder and a keel stepped mast. The interior joiner work is impressive and comprised of teak and mahogany throughout. The hull sides and interiors of the cabinetry are all lined in wood. The cabin sole is solid wood with inlaid ribbons, not just marine plywood as you see in most boats. All of these little details are expensive to do, but represent a level of quality not found every day.
The Shannon 28 is a boat suited for a lifetime of sailing- no matter where you sail. Easy to handle, she has been easily single handed by her current owner since he bought her. Time marches on and he finds, to his great dismay, that he needs to part with her. I’ve known her last two owners as well, dating back to around 1990 or so. All three have truly loved her and felt she was a wonderful little yacht. She has voyaged from Maine to the Caribbean many times over the years and shows no signs of wanting to stop.
If you are looking for a beautiful timeless classic she is certainly worthy of your personal inspection. Call to make an appointment to see her today!
Details 1
V berth: Forward there is access to the chain locker through a louvered panel. The bunk itself has comfortable sleeping for two, with a 75” L x 80” W x 25” W berth. There is a removable filler which can be positioned down as a changing seat or up as a full width berth. Two drawers are beneath the bunk in the cutout, with additional storage beneath the berth. Along the hull staving on either side are soft-sided stowage bags. The screened overhead hatch has a solar vent and there are two dorade vents as well. A pair of gooseneck reading lights provide additional illumination.
Saloon: With a traditional layout, there are opposing straight settees that slide out to make wider berths. Both have foot wells that make the overall length of each 6’10”- or they provide a couple of large storage areas. Both settees have lee clothes and storage behind them. The starboard side has open shelves above and behind the seat, while the port side has fiddled shelves and a double doored locker behind the seat, while at the aft end is a hanging locker with an end table below and drawer and locker space beneath the table top. The centerline drop leaf table can seat four with the leaves up. Headroom is 6’2”. There are four opening ports with screens, one Hella fan and assorted lighting.
Galley: As you enter the companionway, the galley is located on starboard and is U-shaped. The sink is oriented toward centerline and has a tip-out bin beneath it. Towards the hull from that is counter space with dry bin beneath it. The stove is along the hull side, with storage for pans beneath it. The aft end of the U has more counter space with a top-loading, refrigerated icebox beneath it. Above the counters and oven are two sliding door cabinets with shelves and some drawer organizer units; at the aft end is a larger cubby opening for storing larger objects. Above the icebox is the electrical panels and electronics, with the counter top serving double duty as a chart table. Headroom is 6’1”; there is one opening port and an overhead light.
Head: The head is at the base of the companionway and on port. The sink is along the hull, with storage below it. There are two sliding-door cabinets above the counter. The head is aft in the space and forward facing, with a surface to port of it and a wet locker cubby above and behind it. Headroom is 5’11” and there is an opening port and overhead light.
