Description

The Tartan 37 is considered one of today’s classic cruising yachts. Designed by Sparkman and Stephens with a lot of direct input from Tartan Yachts, the boat was introduced in 1976. Initially conceived as a boat that could be sold as a racer as well as a cruiser, it was the shoal draft centerboard cruiser that really took off,  with a remarkable 486 boats built.

The collaborative project that was to become the Tartan 37 started in the spring of 1975 when Tartan Yachts founder, Charlie Britton commissioned Sparkman and Stephens to design a new 37 footer. This wasn’t the first project between the two companies; there was already string of successful collaborations from as earlier as 1961 with the Tartan 27.

The 37 initially was specified as a boat that could be sold as a sloop or a ketch, and there was to be a cruising version and a race version. As the design progressed the ketch was dropped and the racer with its deep fin keel and tall rig was renamed the Tartan 38 while the Tartan 37 became the cruising version available in both fin keel or shoal draft centerboard.

By any standard of performance comparisons, the Tartan 37, for a boat of this class is anything but disappointing. She is quite stable, with windward and downwind sailing performance that is certainly acceptable. When reaching, as would be predicted, this boat excels.

By all rights, nobody should expect a shoal draft centerboard cruiser to break any records, however some of the race intent from the original spec shines through every now and again. For example, Steve Pettingill broke a record in the Port Huron to Mackinac Island single-handed race with his fin keel configured Ambergris. The boat is certainly capable of fast and comfortable 24-hour runs when passage-making.

Pelican is hull number 388 and has served her current owners well. While they love her, it's time to move forward into the next chapter of their lives and hence she is reluctantly offered for sale. She now sits patiently waiting for her next caretakers to step aboard. Come and take a look at this timeless classic!

Accommodations

Master stateroom: Starting forward, there is access to the anchor locker behind a louvered door. The V berth is 6'3" long and 7'3" at it's widest point. The center wedge serves as a dressing seat in it's lowered position. The entire space beneath the V berth cushions opens up to storage. The hull sides and joiner work are all teak and there are shelves runninng forward along both hullsides from the lockers. On port there is a hanging locker with a shelf above it, while on starboard there is a tall locker with shelves and forward of that a stack of drawers and a louvered door locker below that. The top of both forms a shelf. There is a door to this stateroom from the saloon and another door for private access to the head aft on port. An overhead hatch, a pair of stainless steel ports and a pair of reading lights provide light and ventilation to this compartment. Just outside the compartment is another tall hanging locker.

Head: Located on the port side and forward of the saloon, there is entry from the saloon as well as the forward cabin. There is a manual head and a single stainless steel sink. The shower is by means of a diverter valve and shower wand and there is a teak shower grate. Locker storage is beneath the sink and outboard above the head. There are also shelves above and behind the counter and a mirrored medicine cabinet. Ventilation is by a dorade vent and an opening port.

Saloon: Moving aft into the saloon, on starboard there is a straight settee with a pilot berth above that. The settee slides out to make a wider single and the pilot berth is a comfortable 6'3" long. There is storage behind the seat backs. On port, the L shaped dinette is 6'3" long and also has storage behind the seat backs on it. Above and behind are a pair of lockers with sliding doors and a fiddled shelf between those. The large dinette table stows against the bulkhead when not in use, opening the space up nicely. The table can be left down for seating on port or opened up for seating on starboard as well.

Nav station and quarterberth: Aft of the dinette on port, the forward facing nav station has a large chart table with plenty of storage beneath the lid, Above and behind it is an organizer shelf for storage of small items; below are a stack of three drawers for tools, parts and so forth. Seated and to your left is a locker door that opens for a substantial amount of storage space inside. Above is a shelf with several fiddled teak organizers. The seat back can be lifted out and repositioned (utilizing steel tabs that engage slots) in a flat position to make the quarterberth even larger than it already is.

Galley: On starboard at the base of the companionway is the galley. Set up as a good sea galley, the icebox is a generous 7 cubic feet and has two lids for easy access. The stove is a 3 burner and oriented along the hullside. Facing aft you are positioned in front of the double stainless steel sink. There is a cabinet beneath the sink and to the left of it a dry bin storage beneath the counter-top. Behind the sink is a dish organizer and a cutlery drawer. Along the hull above the countertops and stove are three large caned front sliding doors with shelf storage behind them.

Hull and Deck

The hull is hand-laid fiberglass with end-grain balsa coring to improve stiffness without sacrificing weight. In areas of high stress such as the mast-step, through-hull fittings, chain plate terminals, engine supports and keel sections the coring is tapered into solid fiberglass. The deck enjoys the same construction method with a good non-skid surface molded into all flat areas. The hull-to-deck join consists of an internal flange bedded with butyle and polysulfide and bolted to the deck on 8-inch centers.
