Description

The Liberty 458 is recognized as one of the best designs for a offshore liveaboard cruiser ever built.

She boasts graceful lines and unsurpassed structural integrity. In addition, she has great directional stability. Built by Shin Fa Industry, one of Taiwan's oldest and most respected boat builders, working collectively with her developers and inspectors, the Liberty 458 sets an example of the highly perfected craftsmanship and construction techniques emanating from Taiwan.

With an extensive use of warm polished teak, brass ports and special amenities such as the glass enclosed beverage cabinet, with indirect lighting, add touches of luxury and elegance in the uniquely designed saloon. Deck prisms, strategically placed in the companionways, galley, heads and navigation station, reflect day light, creating a bright, airy feeling.

The cabin sole is teak and holly. All of the interior bulkheads are covered with solid teak vertical staving. All ceilings as well as the hullsides have solid horizontal teak battens. There are marble counter tops in the heads. Turned solid teak banisters and thick handrails on either side of the companionway steps give you the first indication of what you are about to enter.

She is in a class by herself; we invite you to see and appreciate her excellence first hand.

Accommodations
Sail locker: Starting forward, there is a large sail locker which can be access through double doors in the head or through a hatch on the foredeck. Access to the chain locker is available in the forward portion of that space and there is lots of space for hanging dock lines and sail bags.

Forward head: Accessed from either of the forward cabins, The head is on center forward. On port there is a shelf space with a hamper below and a louvered hanging locker aft of that. On starboard is a marble topped counter with sink, a large mirrored medicine cabin to the right and an open shelf to the left. The space is ventilated and lit by an overhead hatch, two prisms, an overhead light and a fan.

Forward cabins: There are two staterooms forward, one on each side, each with it's own entrance and each with access forward to the head. The port side features a single 6'6" bunk with three drawers and a double doored locker beneath it. Headroom is a generous 6'5" and light and ventilation is provided by a dorade, an overhead hatch, an opening port, a fan and a reading light. The starboard cabin has over and under bunk beds 6'6" long and 6'6" headroom. Storage is in drawers beneath the lower berth. There is an opening hatch, opening port, fan and two reading lights.

Saloon: With an abundance of warm teak throughout, rich velour upholstery and soft lighting, there is an understated level of elegance in the saloon. Headroom is comfortable and between 6'3" and 6'5" in this spacious area. On the port side, there is a straight settee, with abundant storage both beneath and behind the settee. On starboard there is an L-shaped settee and a dinette table that will comfortably seat four. The dinette pedestal has a mount to attach the nav seat if desired for that extra guest. There is storage located in the dinette table pedestal as well as beneath and behind the settee. Above both settees are fiddled book shelves with louvered double door lockers on either end of the shelves; the aft on port being a liquor cabinet. Lighting and ventilation in here comes from two large fixed lights, four dorade vents, two opening ports, two fans and a number of overhead and reading lights. Entry into the saloon from the cockpit is via a stairway with banisters; the steps have storage underneath- a very useful use of space that often goes ignored.

Galley: Stepping down from the saloon on starboard is the U-shaped galley. This is truly a well designed galley, equally appreciated offshore or at anchor. With everything within easy reach and plenty of counter space to work on, the entire space allows the chef to be included in the conversation without being inconvenienced by passers by. The double sink is oriented towards centerline, the stove along the hullside and the refrigeration along the aft end of the space. Beneath the cockpit sole is a louvered double door locker concealing the microwave. There is a tremendous amount of storage, including a cabinet below the sink, several levels of louvered door lockers along the hullside and above the icebox and a set of four drawers and a pull-out cutting board beneath the counter.

Nav station: Moving into the corridor which leads aft to the master stateroom, the nav station is oriented along the hullside. A swing-out seat with a backrest stores out of the way when not in use; the nav top is spacious enough for a chart book and has a generous amount of storage beneath it. Overhead are shelves and panel space for the electronics. Behind you along the companionway you find the electrical panel, systems controls and access doors for the engine room. Next aft is a workbench, with drawer and locker storage beneath and additional locker storage above.

Master stateroom: The space in the master stateroom is impressive and features a large centerline berth, with three fixed lights across the transom at the head of the bed. Beneath the bed is a set of four large drawers. At the foot of the bed on either side is a dressing seat. Large hanging lockers are on either side of the cabin and both sides have numerous louvered door storage cabinets- overall there is an impressive amount of storage in this cabin. On the forward end there is a vanity with a marble topped counter and sink, with a large mirrored medicine cabinet above it. The ensuite head is on starboard and has a shower, a large shower seat that lowers over the toilet and storage above the seat, with a large shelf area above that. There is an opening port and dorade vent to ventilate the head compartment.

Hull and Deck
The Liberty 458's uncluttered deck design allows crew to move freely and safely, with considerable room for lounging, sunning or fishing. Her handsome exterior, with brass ports, is enhanced with sufficient teak to please the eye without being a burden to maintain. Bulwark mounted stanchions essentially eliminate the possibility of leaking.

The deck is constructed of a single unit, hand-laminated with 24 oz. woven roving alternated with 1.5 oz. mat and is a balsa sandwich core construction.

The hull mold is hand-laminated 24 oz. woven roving alternated with 1.5 oz. mat, producing 13 layers at the rail, 15 layers at the turn of the bilge and 17 layers at the keel. 5/8" closed cell polyurethane foam is added to inner skin and covered by 2 layers of 1.5 oz. mat, providing good sound and noise insulation. All bulkheads and floors are bonded to the hull.

The rudder is built of hand-laminated 24 oz. woven roving and 1.5 oz. mat tapered to 1/2" at the trailing edge. The rudder shaft is 2" solid stainless steel. The skeg is fitted with a cast bronze shoe and there are Teflon bushings at the shoe and stuffing box.
