Description

NOTE: THERE WAS A SURVEY DONE RECENTLY ON THE BOAT WHICH IS AVAILABLE TO SERIOUS BUYERS. THAT DISCLOSED ELEVATED MOISTURE IN PARTS OF THE HULL, PRIMARILY FROM THE STERN AND FORWARD. CONSEQUENTLY WE ARE LOWERING THE PRICE FROM $89,000 TO $20,000 ON AN AS-IS, WHERE-IS BASIS.

The Slocum 43 is a sturdy, cutter rigged double-ender designed by naval architect Stan Huntingford of Vancouver, British Columbia. It evolved from his famous Passport 42 design. A handful of them were built in the Pilothouse configuration, as is our offering.

While many may not be familiar with Stan, you may recognize some of his works- Passport 42 & 51, Maple Leaf and Cooper Pilothouses, Chinook, True North, Rafikis and the Liberty 49, among many others. All solid boats with owners that love them. These are world-class offshore cruisers and not dock anchor boats- they cruise and can routinely be seen in all corners of the world.

Built to American Bureau of Shipping standards, the Slocum 43 Pilothouse was built at the Hai-O Yacht Building Yards in Taiwan by Cruising Yachts International under the supervision of Jan Stadman, who designed most of the interior. These are heavy displacement yachts that are superior to many of the better known cruising yachts of her size.

Below the water line the hull shows a fine entry with a long cutaway forefoot followed by an efficient and modern keel and a deep profile skeg-hung rudder just forward of a tapered stern section. This design combination readily separates the Slocum 43 from other traditional yachts and offers ease of handling with lively, safe performance.

Topsides, the tumble home stern, deep, safe secure cockpit, raised bulwarks with high lifelines, beefy standing rigging and sensible deck layout make for a true blue water cruiser.

The interior is one of the warmest, roomiest and most comfortable interiors available in a 43’ cruising yacht. Fine teak joinery as one comes to expect from Taiwan builders even to this day. Great storage throughout and a galley with plenty of refrigeration and counter space. These boats make a great live-aboard and a comfortable, sturdy passage maker.

Accommodations

Aft stateroom: On port and at the base of the companionway is the master stateroom.  There is a 6’7” x 54” berth with four drawers beneath it and top access to storage under the rest of the berth.  There are four other lockers in the space in various places as well as a small fiddled nightstand shelf for small items.  Light and ventilation are provided by one overhead light, 2 reading lights, a reading light on port, one overhead hatch, and a sliding glass window aft to the cockpit. Headroom in here is 6’10”.

Quarter berth: On starboard and across from the master stateroom is a quarter berth. The berth is 6’7” long and 35” wide at the shoulders. Along the hullside and above the berth are double-doored lockers, with a fiddled shelf in between them. On the forward end is a hanging locker with shelves in it.

Saloon: The pilothouse saloon layout provides a great view of the outside and allows a comfortable place to steer from in bad weather. There is a 7’ long L-shaped settee on port which can also serve as a berth, with storage beneath and behind the cushions. Above and behind it is a shelf; there are also fiddled bookshelves along the aft bulkhead. On starboard is the inside steering station, with a comfortable height-adjustable seat with arms. There are drawers and locker space outboard of that; electrical panels are also along the hull adjacent to the helm seat.

The windows surrounding the pilothouse, while providing great visibility, are also protected with storm shutters for offshore passages. Three overhead hatches (as well as the companionway and a Hella fan) provide ventilation to the area. There are four overhead lights for additional illumination if desired. Headroom is 6’3”.

Galley: U-shaped, the galley is down and to port. The aft end features a freezer and refrigerator; the freezer being top loading and the fridge is top and front loading. On the end is a louvered door locker beneath the counter. Moving along the hullside, there is a stove and oven, with a pots and pans locker beneath that. Moving around, the forward end of the galley has a large dry bin next to the stove, then a deep pair of double sinks. The sinks have a double doored locker beneath them. To the right of that is a stack of five drawers.

Above the counter along the hull is a shelf and microwave oven directly behind the stove, with sliding louvered doored shelving spaces to either side of that. Above the sink area are a couple more louvered door cabinets.

Across from the galley is the dinette. With opposing bench seats, it can comfortably seat four. The table is height adjustable and there is a fiddled shelf on the hullside above the table for condiments or whatever. Forward of that is a counter space with a doored locker above it and five drawers below it. Even further forward of that is a hanging locker which has been fitted out with shelves to optimize storage space. There are two reading lights and a table lamp for lighting and a Hella fan for ventilation. Headroom in the galley and dinette area is 6’3”.

Head: Located on the port side forward of the galley, when you enter the space the head is to your left and the separate shower stall is to your right.  The sink and counter space are immediately in front of you along the hull.  There is storage above and beneath the sink.  Hand holds are plentiful with a fiddled counter space.  In addition, there are grab bars in the shower and head and a continuous hand hold along the house top.  There are three overhead lights, a Dorade vent, 2 opening ports and a Hella fan for ventilation. Headroom in here is 6’4”.

Forward stateroom: As you enter the forward stateroom immediately on starboard is a hanging locker with shelves, followed by a 6-drawer dresser with a large fiddled countertop.  Above that and along the hull are a stack of five drawers, two louvered double door lockers and a fiddled shelf in between the lockers.  Forward is double doored access to the chain locker.  On port are a pair of bunk beds 27”x70”.  There are two overhead hatches, two overhead lights, two reading lights, a Hella fan and one opening port. Headroom is 6’5”.
