"Ka Pua"
1986 Express 35
Specifications
Description
The Express 35 was the brainchild of Steve Killing and Bill Goman, two former C & C Yachts employees who left in 1979 to start their own businesses. Steve, after seven years on C & C’s design team, started his own design firm; in fact, Steve Killing Yacht Design is still in business today. Bill formed Goman Boats Ltd., which later changed hands and became Express Yachting.
Killing, an America’s Cup designer, designed the Express 35 in 1983 with a relatively light overall displacement of 10,600 pounds. Although the production weight is actually 12,500 pounds, almost half of it is concentrated in the keel to balance a generous sailplan of 643 square feet. The first hull was launched in 1984. The boat has a PHRF of around 123 and has a reputation among racers that have been around a while of being a good performer. Steve Killing designed the Express 35 as a performance cruiser and that's what she is.
Ka Pua, a 1986 Express 35, is hull number 27 of what is believed to be 44. Also known as the Goman Express 35, hull number 27 is a shoal draft version of this Steve Killing design, built by Express Yachting (formerly Goman Boats) in Midland, Ontario. She is an exceptionally large 35 footer with a generous double spreader masthead rig, comfortable interior and a great cockpit for racing or cruising. She can easily be sailed by a couple, with all lines led aft to the cockpit. Ka Pua had been a freshwater boat until 2003, when she was purchased and shipped to the Chesapeake by her current owners.
Her owners are now ready to move on to another adventure and are somewhat reluctantly putting her up for sale- it’s been a great boat for them. The combination of sound design, comfortable appointments and quality construction adds up to good value for her next caretakers. Ka Pua is a nice boat and certainly worthy of your inspection.

Vessel walk-thru-
V berth: There is a 6’3” x 6’ berth with insert. The owner has modified this (and had the foresight to make it easily removable if the next owner should not want it) by adding a drop-down storage locker beneath the V insert. There are fiddled teak shelves lining both hull sides. On starboard there is a mirrored shelving locker with a shelf above it and dresser counter beneath, with two drawers and a drop-front locker beneath that. On port there is a hanging locker with a Sunbrella zippered cover. Ventilation to this cabin is through an overhead hatch and Hella fan. A pair of double doors closes the stateroom off from the rest of the boat, though this owner had elected to leave both doors off during their use, making the space quite open and inviting.
Saloon: There is an L-shaped settee on port and a straight settee on starboard. Each settee has storage beneath is and behind the seat backs, with a fiddled shelf immediately above and behind the seat back, sliding door storage above that along the full length of the hull sides and a shelf above that. The dinette table is mounted on centerline, with drop leaves on either side of the mast, easily seating five for meals. The port settee makes a good sea berth, being 6’4” long. The starboard settee is shorter due to the nav station, but could comfortably sleep a child.
Galley: Located on port, the galley is L-shaped, with the double stainless steel sink oriented towards centerline. The gimbaled LPG stove is along the hull side. Above the end of the counter and above the stove are sliding doors with storage the full length of the galley; above that are two acrylic drop-down doors with dish organizers behind them. There is a locker beneath the sink on the aft side, while on the end of the counter and beneath the sink there is a swing-out door with a spice rack and bottle storage below the rack.
Nav station: Located at the aft end of the starboard settee, the nav station is forward facing and consequently has its own dedicated seat, with storage beneath that. The chart table top is generous and has good storage beneath it- both below the lid and in the four drawers located facing the galley. The table top has an acrylic fiddle to help keep things in place and a stainless steel grab bar that provides a great, easy to reach handhold when underway- especially good for shorter folks.
Head: The head is on starboard and aft of the nav station. There is a laminate countertop with teak fiddles; shelf storage with sliding mirrored doors is along the hull side above the counter. There are lockers beneath the sink and a wet hanging locker behind the head with a Sunbrella cover. A large dressing mirror is located across from the sink towards centerline.
Aft stateroom: Located on port and aft of the galley, there is a nice sized 6’4” x 42” berth, with carpeted hull sides up to the fiddled shelf along the hull. Teak staving lines the hull above that. The owner built a custom teak shelf above the aft end of the bunk for additional storage. This modification is easily removed should you desire to do so, but it doesn’t encroach on the berth space as it is so far down toward your feet that it’s not an obstruction. A ventilated hanging locker is accessed behind a mirrored door, with a bureau top in front of and drawers below that. There is an opening port, solar vent and Hella fan for ventilation in this space.
