The Najad yard is located on the northern shores of the island of Orust, where boat building can be traced back to at least the 12th century. The Vikings built their longships there during the winter months and farmed during the summers. Generation upon generation have developed and carried forward the traditional craft of boat building. Here, to this day, you can still find craftsmen who build boats in wood with a level of quality and seaworthiness, either for work or pleasure, without the use of drawings or templates. It is in these surroundings and from this tradition that the Najad yard has evolved.
The word ‘Najad’ comes from Greek mythology and refers to a type of water nymph – ‘a female creature which seduces men and women in the water’.
The craftsmanship one finds in this region is impressive and evident in every Najad produced. They share their level of woodworking quality with the other boat building families from the island- Hallberg Rassy, Malo, Sweden. All of them are known for a level of quality and fine woodwork that is without reproach. Since The first Najad hull was completed in 1971, every Najad is still built individually and crafted to meet the needs of the specific owner, so no boat is exactly like anyone else’s.
A beautifully built family cruiser with round-the-world capabilities, the Najad 343 offers easy handling with superb cabin comfort and Swedish quality. It has a wrap-around glass windscreen; with a dodger extension, bimini and full enclosure it offers great protection in the cockpit. Inside, rich golden mahogany grains and outstanding joiner work provide a warm, cozy feel to the cabin space, immediately making one feel at home and safe.
Aurora has served her current owners well and they, in turn, have taken care of her needs. When you step on board and begin to inspect her that is obvious- from the lack of scratches in the woodwork, the neatness of the spaces to the tidiness of her bilges. She is an attractive vessel- on land or in the water- and ready to serve and protect her next owners. Whether you are looking for a boat for the Bay of for ocean adventures, Aurora is more than capable and is certainly worthy of your inspection. Call and make an appointment to see her today!
Details 1
The interior of the Najad 343 is a rich red mahogany, with a satin varnished finish. The space is warm, comfortable and inviting. White headliner with mahogany accent strips helps keep the space feeling bright and open.
V Berth: Starting forward and aft of the chain locker is a 6' 2" long V berth. There is a fiddled shelf running forward on either side and a double doored locker is above the berth at the bow. The entire space below the berth is dedicated to storage, including drawers and drop front doors in the 'V' portion of the space. Immediately aft of the berth on port is a hanging locker; on starboard a stack of drawers with a dresser height top in between for counter space. There is 6'3" headroom in this cabin. Two overhead hatches provide ventilation to the space.
Saloon: Moving aft into the saloon the headroom increases to 6'3" and 6'4" depending on where you are. The mahogany dinette table can easily seat six for meals and is located on centerline, with a convent bottle storage locker inside, and a drop leaf on the starboard side. There is an L-shaped settee on port and a straight settee on starboard. The seat backs on both settees lift up to provide wider, 6' 2" long berths. The starboard settee has drop-front locker storage beneath it. Both have a shelf space behind and above them with three drop front lockers above that. There are six fixed lights and an overhead hatch for ventilation and illumination, in addition to a variety of LED overhead and reading lights.
Nav station: The end of the starboard settee provides seating for the aft facing navigation station. Beneath the nav top lid is storage, with a pair of drawers beneath that.
Head: Aft of the nav station is the enclosed head. There is a teak shower grate. The head sink is porcelain and huge compared to what you usually see on a boat. There is a pull-out shower mixer and storage beneath the counter top, a mirror above it as well as lockers along the hull side above the head and end of the counter top. There is an opening port in this space; headroom is 6’.
Galley: Moving across to the port side is the L-shaped galley and walk-thru to the aft cabin. The double sink is oriented towards centerline, has locker storage beneath it. and a small bin storage beneath the counter along the hull side end of the sinks. Continuing around along the hull is the two burner stove & oven, with a pot bin beneath that. Next is a stack of four drawers and a drop down door locker, followed by the icebox. Above the counter top and along the hull sides are shelves with sliding doors. Headroom in the galley is 6’4”.
Master stateroom: Continuing aft towards the master stateroom, there is a locker with shelves in the corridor, the door for which doubles as the door for the master stateroom.
Moving into the master stateroom, normally you would find the traditional Scandinavian master cabin arrangement, with a 6’3” long double berth located on starboard and a 6’3” single berth on port. Aurora’s owners have modified this, as they didn’t feel the need for the single berth on port. While still leaving seating space, he installed a custom mahogany unit that fits across the port side of the transom, provides counter space and has storage inside. Across the entire aft end of the space and above the berth are drop front door lockers for clothing storage. Ventilation and lighting is great, with an overhead hatch and a pair of opening portholes.

The hull and deck are designed and built according to Lloyd’s specifications for ‘Hull Construction Certificate’
The hull is solid laminate GRP with built-in longitudinal and transversal reinforcements above and below the waterline. All bulkheads are bonded to the hull from both sides. The deck and superstructure are constructed using a GRP and Devinycell sandwich for added strength and insulation properties. The hull and deck are joined together by overlapping GRP laminates. The bulwarks are constructed of bonded hull and deck laminates topped by a Burma teak capping rail. Reinforcements are added below all winches, tracks and high-stress areas.
The teak deck was removed, then fiberglassed and gelcoated in 2002.
The rudder is constructed of cored GRP. A 35mm diameter stainless steel rudder stock is employed with cast bronze rudder fittings attached to a full depth GRP skeg. The long fin keel is ballasted and encapsulated in GRP. The prop runs inside an aperture, providing maximum protection from trap and pot lines.
