Description

Cape Dory Yachts were around for a long time and some of the models, in fact, are still being built by Robin Hood Marine. They are true classics in the world of yacht design. Their traditional styling and robust construction, with a full keel and cutaway forefoot, is designed to be steady under foot in a sea and give a feeling of comfort and security to her owners when they want it most. In fact, many Cape Dory's have circumnavigated and their quality workmanshp and attention to detail is appreciated by many.

The original CD30 was the work of the reknowned designer Carl Alberg. In the 10 years of production from 1976 to 1986, when he passed away, 386 hulls were produced. In 1987 Cape Dory introduced the MKII. Clive Dent, Cape Dory's Chief Designer, had made several changes to the boat, including a larger head with a separate sit down stall shower, a U-shaped galley and a bulkhead mounted dinette table. A wider beam provided about 30% more living space than the original CD30's.

Our listing, Ethos, is hull number 3 of the 41 MKII models produced between 1987 and 1990. The current owner purchased her in 1994 and has maintained her in an appropriate fashion. Ethos has:

New in 2008-
Profurl roller furler
Standing rigging
Raymarine wind instrument

New in 2006-
Westerbeke engine
transmission
PSS shaft seal
3 blade prop & stainless steel shaft
UK full batten main
UK 140 Genoa
all teak refinished

And her hull was peeled and got a new vinylester bottom.

So her foundation is excellent and about as ready for new owners as they come!

Accomodations
Forward stateroom: Aft of the chain locker door, there is a spacious V berth with an ash batten lined hull. Storage is provided by shelves that run full length down each side, beneath the berth and lockers on both port and starboard. There are two reading lights and two opening ports and a hatch for good ventilation. A bifold door provides privacy from the rest of the vessel but stows away so well you hardly notice it is there.

Head: Aft of the master cabin to starboard is the head. There is a manual head with a Y-valve for direct overboard discharge, a nice size mirror and sink and storage below the sink and outboard of the head. Adjacent is the shoiwer stall, which features a teak seat and teak grate floor. Ventilation to the head area is via a dorade and one opening port.

Saloon: Working aft from the master stateroom on the port side, you will find a ventilated hanging locker with a shelf above it, followed by a straight settee. Theree is a shelf outboard, storage behind and below the settee, ash batten lined hull and a secure grabrail overhead.

On the starboard side, the bulkhead mounted dinette table folds up and out of the way for even more spaciousness when you want it; the settee on starboard converts to a comfortable double berth for guests and has storage behind and below- again with a shelf outboard and ash battens behind.

Aft of that is a quarterberth, which features a clever nav table that folds up when not in use. Both settees have two reading lights and are 6'4" long, so sleeping space is not a problem for most folks on these! The overhead in the saloon has a hatch for ventilation and is white with rich teak battens, providing a light and inviting feeling to the space.

Galley: A true yacht has a galley that is laid out in a sensible fashion and is comfortable to work in. The Cape Dory's galley lends credence to this fact in her design. The double sink is towards centerline as it should be. The two burner stove is adequate yet not consuming too much space. A safety bar in front of it protects the cook while underway at sea. Refrigeration is generous for a vessel this size, storage is ample and things are all within reach- as it should be.

All in all, she is a comfortable vessel, seaworthy and well tended to. The richness and craftmanship of the joinery is inviting, yet the overall feeling is bright and airy with a tradional feel to it. Worth the time to take a look at- please come see her for yourself!

Hull and Deck
The hull shape of the Cape Dory 30 MKII differs from the original version in a number of ways. While still retaining the full keel Cape Dory's are known for, the MKII was redesigned with a beamier canoe body, reduced section deadrise and garboard radius. This increased the effective length of the keel. The result, when coupled with inboard chainplates for closer sheeting angles, gives the MKII better windward performance- all the while maintaining the seaworthiness and tracking.
