Description

“Bear” is a classic Bruce Roberts designed cutter rigged ketch. Ruggedly constructed of steel and professionally built by a naval engineer, she was designed and built for safety and serious offshore cruising. Bear is certainly capable of not only doing time in the tropics, but also taking on the Northern or Southern-most latitudes- and keeping you safe and comfortable in the process. The size and displacement provide a greater comfort in large seas not found on most vessels.

Her hull was laid in 1981; however she was not launched for the first time until 1990. Since then, Bear has proven herself repeatedly, with the current owners having just completed their own three year circumnavigation. The previous owners also circumnavigated aboard her. Bear has been trans-Atlantic a few times and done other offshore cruising to a variety of destinations. She has been continuously upgraded along the way and kept in fine shape; when I first stepped aboard she certainly presented as a boat that is ready and just waiting to go back out there and do it all over again.

The cutter ketch rig on Bear allows fast and safe sailing in most conditions- from light to heavy wind- and is easily sailed by two adults (as evidenced by the two circumnavigations done by couples). The sailing performance has continuously met and surpassed the owner’s expectations. The hard dodger and bimini enclosure keeps the crew warm and dry in stormy weather and can provide shelter in the worst of conditions. When you look at her it is not hard to imagine Bear picking her way through the glaciers.

The current owners have lived the dream and to a level most would only dream of. While they would like to continue their adventures and living aboard, they have come to a time where they want to spend more time with their family and new grandchildren. They feel, loving their boat as they do, that selling her is not simply that, but a passing of the baton to the next owners. They are hoping that they will love her just as much and will feel the same pure joy, as the sails fill, pointing the bow towards the horizon and feeling her surge forward, galloping through the waves, free again at last.

Bear is ready to do it all and more again. If you are looking for a safe, solid offshore passage maker that is ready to go, Bear deserves to be on your short list. Come see her for yourself.

Accommodations
Bear's layout, though used by a couple for the last ten years or so, is also an ideal layout for a cruising family or for the visits from the kids and grandkids along your voyage. With identical bunk bed cabins on either side forward of the saloon, in addition to the V berth, there's plenty of room for children or guests to have their own living spaces.

V berth: The forward part of the V berth is a steel collision bulkhead. There is a watertight hatch to provide an inside access the chain locker (which is also accessible from the deck). Beneath the 6'4" long berth is drawer storage; along the starboard side of the berth are a group of four bin and one large hanging locker, giving you a tremendous amount of storage in this cabin. The port side of the hull is lined with oak staving and has a fiddled shelf the length of the hull. There is an overhead hatch and a 12 volt fan for ventilation. Headroom is 6' except under the large hatch, which is 4" or 5" higher.

Guest staterooms: Moving aft in the corridor from the V berth, there are identical cabins on either side. Each has bunks, with drawers beneath the lower bunk and vertical cubby bins mounted on the forward bulkhead. Each of these cabins has 6'3" headroom, an overhead hatch and a dorade vent.

Saloon: The space in the main saloon is generous and comfortable; with the 6'7" headroom it feels quite spacious and bright. Along the port side is a large L-shaped settee that is 8' on the long side and 54" across the forward end, so seating is generous. There is a drop leaf table that can seat six easily and eight a little snugly. There is storage beneath and behind the settee; above it is a fiddled shelf and six lockers.

Across on the starboard side is another settee, shorter than on the port side, with the nav station just aft of that. The settee has storage beneath and behind it, as well as two fiddled bookshelves above. Along the forward bulkhead is the large diesel cabin heater, with quarry tile beneath it and behind it on the bulkhead to protect the wood. A wood framed surround provides protection from bumping into a hot stove while underway.

The entire space has a teak and holly cabin sole. The white lockers and overhead with oak battens and trim keep the space inviting and lend a traditional feel. There are six fixed ports, four brass fluorescent lights and a pair of brass reading lights.

Nav station: The large table provides plenty of space to lay out charts. The back side of the surface has a fiddle installed, with organizer bins behind that, for storage of all those little things that always seem to accumulate inside your chart table. Electronics are mounted on the panel above that. The seat is a swing out that stows under the table and out of the way when not in use. There are a pair of storage lockers on either side of the knee space.

Galley: The galley is linear and located along the corridor leading aft on the starboard side. The centerline side is a solid wall of locker storage and also houses the microwave. There is access to the engine room from here as well. This wall wraps around behind the cockpit space and has several more lockers and fiddled narrow bookshelves on it- perfect for files or those over sized books. Along the hull side, the counter tops are stainless steel and included molded in double sinks and stainless steel back splash. Following that is the gimbaled propane stove. There is under counter storage beneath the sink and stove. Next aft are the refrigeration and freezer, which are quite large and have stainless steel counters on them as well. Overall, the counter space is huge; you would be hard put to use it all. There are lockers along the hull side above the counters and stove; these in conjunction with the lockers on centerline make for an astounding amount of storage. Headroom in the galley is a generous 6'5" and plenty of ventilation is provided by two overhead hatches and two opening ports.

Master stateroom: Entering into the stateroom, my immediate impression was "look at all of these lockers!". Overhead, a huge butterfly hatch provides great light and ventilation. On starboard there is a settee, with storage beneath and lockers above it. There is a peninsula shaped table that stows on the bulkhead when not in use. The SSB is back here, so the owners used this as a place to relax during weather routing broadcasts and the table to sit a drink and make notes. Across from this on port is a hanging locker and a vanity, with storage beneath it and a mirrored medicine cabinet above it. Across the aft end of the cabin, the master berth is oriented athwart ships and is 54" x 75". There are a total of 12 lockers at the head and foot of the bed, a pair of fans and a pair of reading lights.

Workshop: Moving aft of the saloon along the port side of the boat there is a corridor leading to the head. Within this corridor is a storage and workshop area completely lined with lockers. The hull side has a small fiddled ledge along it at waist height and mounts installed to receive a removable bench top and vice. There are a total of ten lockers on this side. Along the centerline side, one pair of locker doors open to reveal the three Racor fuel filters and fuel polishing system- easy to get at and work on. Another, large double doors, swing open an the right hand door has a tool box unit mounted on it, with an opening door on that revealing a stack of drawers- really ingenious and it keeps everything tidy! Further inside of this locker are two removable panels that provide access to this side of the engine. There are five lockers besides these along that side of the corridor.

Head: Next aft is the head. There is a sink and Lavac head along the centerline, a tub outside along the hull and two large storage lockers aft of the tub. A hatch and opening port provide plenty of ventilation and keep it bright in this space.

Hull and Deck
Unlike many steel boats out there under the Bruce Roberts name, "Bear" was built by a professional US Navy welder. It shows. The curves are smooth and very little fairing can be found on the hull. A steel collision bulkhead forward provides an extra measure of safety should you need it. Steel storm covers can be put on if necessary for protection of the port lights and the hatches that aren't solid steel already. The companionway door is steel and has an observation window & dogs to secure it, providing watertight safety there as well. The hard dodger is big enough to provide shelter for the crew in even the worst conditions, making standing watches a lot more comfortable. The owners took that a step further and had a reinforced bimini fabricated, which is heavily built and has stainless grab bars, solar panels and hatches incorporated into the structure. A window connector installs between the two and there are full cockpit window and screen enclosures, so this is a very safe, very comfortable cockpit, whether at anchor or during offshore passages.

Engine & Machinery
The Perkins engine has been looked after well, with routine oil and filter changes, and runs like a champ. The owners have taken the "ounce of prevention" approach with their fuel with the polishing system keeping the fuel fresh before it goes to the engine. The four fuel tanks make this job easy, helping to ensure uneventful passages when motoring. Too much of that and you could forget how to bleed the system!
