Description

This Dickerson 37 is, quite literally, the last one built. The Dickerson Boatyard had gone out of business in the late 80’s and the tooling sold to a local company. When the original owner wanted a Dickerson constructed the former employees were brought back to build the boat.

The Dickerson 37 is a George Hasen design, using (then) state-of-the-art computer technologies. Not well known outside the marine industry by many, George is well known within it. While George was studying naval architecture and marine engineering at Princeton. he won national acclaim for his honors thesis, "The Use of a Computer to Analyze Flow Patterns Around a Hull." After receiving his Master's degree in Naval Architecture from M.I.T. and serving as a full-term member of the H. Irving Pratt project which developed the MHS rule, George spent several years designing racing and cruising boats. He later opened his own naval architect's office in Annapolis and developed a computer-aided design program which virtually replaced tank testing. Without going into great detail, his Technical Performance software will tell exactly how well a boat performs at different wind angles and different wind velocities.

Dickersons were built in a lovely boatyard on the Chesapeake Bay, using only the best materials and the best of the Eastern Shore craftsmen. Ferenc Mate gives the Dickersons, and the Dickerson 37' in particular, a wonderful write up in his book “The World's Best Sailboats”. Mate referred to the Dickerson 37 as follows: "Overall the boat is so cleanly designed that there isn't a single bump or line or ridge anywhere that can be removed. She looks completely clean and pure."

It is ideally suited for the Chesapeake, Florida and the Bahamas- with its 4'6" draft this fine yacht has access to many beautiful anchorages not available to deeper draft vessels. A skeg rudder provides stable tracking and easy steering. Sailing performance is exceptional, with a sail area/displacement ratio of 2.73.

The Dickerson 37 was built with the most up-to date technologies and materials of the time. She has an Airex cored hull and a balsa cored deck, which provides strength while at the same time saving weight. All thru hulls were drilled out and replaced with fiberglass before installing the bronze thru hull fittings and sea cocks.

The boat is nimble and easily sailed. She balances nicely with an almost neutral helm in these conditions. When a puff hits there is no excessive heeling; rather the energy is translated into drive. She is a sweet sailing boat!

If you are interested in a classic beauty such as this, she is certainly worthy of your personal inspection. You won’t be disappointed!

There are a pair of lockers beneath the berth. The hullsides are finished in ash staving. At the aft ends of the berth on either side are a pair of hanging lockers, each with a dresser top shelf above it. The starboard side has a cubbie behind it that is accessed from the berth side. Ventilation to the cabin is good, with a large overhead hatch and a pair of opening ports. A bi-fold door separates this cabin from the saloon when needed but doesn't infringe on the overall space the rest of the time.

Saloon- The saloon has opposing settees; the port side being 57" long, while then starboard side is 6'6" long and easily converts to a 39" wide berth. There is storage behind the back cushions of both settees as well as below all of the space beneath them, with drop-down locker doors on the front of the settees. Storage above the port settee is a fiddled shelf and a double doored locker to the right of that. Storage on the starboard settee is a double doored locker to the left, fiddled shelf in the middle and a single doored locker to the right. The teak dinette table folds up against the forward bulkhead when desired or not in use.

Head- Located aft of the saloon on starboard, there is a stainless steel sink set in a molded fiberglass cabinet, with storage beneath it. To the right of that is the manual head, with a self contained holding tank. There are three cabinets behind and above the head and sink, with sliding teak doors. The shower is on it's on mixer and has a shower wand.

Galley- The galley is on port and located across from the head. U shaped, The deep single sink is oriented toward centerline and forward facing. There is a dry bin beneath a cutting board counter insert to the left of the sink with a good amount of storage inside. Along the hullside is the stove; to the left of that and wrapping back around is the icebox. Approximately 7 sq. ft. in size, the owners have added extra insulation, making it easy for the 12v refrigeration to do it's job. Along the hullside there is cabinet storage; above the icebox there is a bi-fold door opening to the aft cabin of the boat to allow for good flow-through ventilation yet privacy when you need it.

Aft cabin & nav station- In the aft cabin of the boat there is a berth on port and the nav station on starboard. There is a generous amount of storage beneath the berth in addition to a stack of three drawers. Across at the nav station there is a large nav top with storage beneath. Beneath the nav top is a locker and the cabin sole lifts for more dry storage. There is a locker outboard under what can serve as an armrest. The nav seat also has storage beneath it.
